Snowballs are easily one of New Orleans most delicious summer treats. They’re so oddly simple (shaved ice and flavored syrup) that it’s almost a wonder why they’re so popular. But if you’re from New Orleans or have just been through ONE of our summers you’ll know why. These sweet, icy treats are just so alluring; from the cute little stands that sell them to the assortment of flavors, with their unique names, all the way to their array of colors…the possibilities are almost endless! So not only are they beautiful AND delicious, but they are wonderfully refreshing…(and did I mention affordable?) Makes the summers here just a little bit more bearable.
Since Katrina, many of our favorite stands have closed, but what’s worst is that many of the people who enjoy snowballs are no longer living in New Orleans. My sister and brother-in-law now live outside of Atlanta, GA as a result of Katrina. Right before summer started this year another New Orleans native informed them of a snowball stand that claimed to make New Orleans famous snowballs, so they decided to check it out. [Might I add here that there are a few other places that claim to make “New Orleans snowballs” but from what I hear other places just can’t quite do it like us.] So during one of my recent trips to visit my sister in Atlanta we took a trip to a snowball stand called Orleagian Snowballs. A play on the two locations names…their slogan is “A taste of New Orleans for the pleasure of Georgians.” The guys that own the stand are right here from New Orleans East and have been in Georgia since Katrina. The snowballs were delicious! I had the Hurricane Katrina (don’t judge me, I wanted to try something different) and my sister had the Green Apple. I would definitely visit again. I didn’t have my camera with me, but my cell phone did the job all the same. Click the photo for more images.
